I guess it depends on what you do and what times you come in to work. When I worked for restaurants, no we didn't get a lunch. We didn't get a break until our shift was up. When I worked for other jobs and worked 10-5, I just got a break, not a lunch. Maybe you could give us more information and we could better help you.

It's a very common practice, especially when there is a lot of work to catch up. Though by law, you are entitled to <30 min lunch & 2 breaks in the morning & afternoon (10 min each) in California. But it doesn't really happen all the time.

The only time I actually do work is my lunch break. I feel so guilty for screwing off all morning that I make myself squeeze in a whole 30 minutes of productivity a day.

Well, depends on where you are located. I am in the south, Alabama , and this is a right- to -work state.
The company does not have to provide a break to you at all, they do it out of courtesy , if at all. I found out the hard way. Check with your local state government on labor laws in the state you live in (California is different, just the opposite). Good luck.

Many people think that the law requires you to get a break after working 4 hours. This isn't necessarily true. It depends on what state you live in. In many states employers do not have to give you a break after a certain amount of hours. Check out your state labor laws.

Growing, busy companies are like that. Unfortunately, so are stable, established, and incompetent ones.

Is it worth the money anyway? Are you learning a lot, do you see advancement potential?

Be sure you don't insist on your right to eat from a paper bag in peace if the long term price is you give up a promotion to a corner office.

They have to give you a break if you work so many hours. It doesn't have to be over lunch, though. If you work more than four hours and don't get any break at all, they are breaking the law and you should report them.

Well, they don't make me work through, they just make me feel guilty when I leave. Because noone else leaves for lunch. Sometimes I choose not to. It's my choice

There are no breaks in food service.
If you can't shove it down the hole in 2 minutes while standing on the line doing 3 other things, you should rethink your career path.
