why is weight not a good quanity to use as a standard unit?

because weight is dependant on gravity, mass x g.
g can change around the globe, and of course is different anywhere off earth.
also if you were given a problem of a force applied to a weight horizontally, you would have to convert weight to mass before calculating the acceleration. the extra step should be avoided.
