His parents owned the house and they were selling. The buyer was interested in the property for investment-so he was looking for a renter Im the renter- the monies never got paid to the orginal landlord, and now the house is in foreclosure.

Specifically, what damages? Did you get a roof over your head for the money that you agreed to?

Isn't that what renting is all about?

I think the real owner could sue him for damages.

No, but the property owner can sue both of you. You'd only be able to recover from the scammer what the property owner recovered from you. If you had paid any advance rents you could get that back as well.

there are scammers within the US... how do you know he is where he says he is? and the so called personal info is correct? you can file a police report--and maybe a claim in small claims court... was this off craiglist or ebay? how did you come across this?

How did he wrong you? Was the property in disrepair and he didn't fix it? What damages are you referring to?
You had a place to live, right? So, what's your beef?

You can sue people for anything now days! I'd jump on it before he decides to skip town.
