I take an intro level chem class and this is one of the problems we have for homework,

1.) For each of the following compounds, write the formula and name for any polyatomic ions which might be present:

(the numbers are supposed to be subscripted, Y! Answers isn't letting me subscript them)

CaCl2
AlCl3
KCN
Ba(OH)2
NaClO3
FeBr2
AgNO3
NaMnO4
K2CrO4
(NH4)2SO4
Ca3(PO4)2
NaHSO4
MoO2
CaCr2O7

I'm not asking for answers, I'm just wanting to know how I would find the answers given those compounds?

All the above compounds are ionic Hence they have radicals i.e an anion and cation.
Make a list of the anions and cations and their respective charges. Note that if my anion is A x-(with x negative charge) and the cation B y+ the molecular formula is AyBx reduced to the lowest fraction so as to make the total charge of the molecule 0.
Cl- CN- OH- ClO3- Br- NO3- MnO4- CrO4-- SO4-- PO4--- HSO4- O2-- Cr2O7-- I- F- NO2- O-- S-- SO3-- CO3-- are the common anions.
The metals and NH4+ etc are cations. You would get the names from any chemistry text.

You are trying to do your assignment without mastering the lesson and this just does not work. Review your text and you will readily learn and memorize the radicals and then the answer is clear. One example of a radical is OH-; note the Barium compound above clearly shows this.

Memorize the radicals and you will be able to do your homework AND also pass the test

You should have basic rules in your textbook that will explain how to name these compounds. How will you pass your tests if you dont know how to name the compounds? Look them up.

polyatomic ions are ions that come togther like (OH), CLO3, NO3, PO4, Cr2O7, CrO4, MnO4, CN, HSO4, SO4, NO3. So most of them listed.
