This week I told an instructor that I could issue his students new registration codes since there new expensive books didn't come with them. So I gave 3 students free codes to the students. However, when the instructor emailed me a list of students who need registration codes for their online class there were at least 100 names. So I asked my boss about it now and he said you remember the memo I sent out a couple of months ago about no longer providing codes for certain books and that students now have to purchase access($15) to their online class. I totally forgot about it since I rarely get calls about engineering books. Anyway I called the instructor back to let him know that I am deeply sorry about the incorrect information I had given him. I explained to him that our policy recently changed and that the students will have to purchase access. I also told him that I would a copy an email to his students stating my error. His response was what about his reputation as an instructor.

I once sent out all the paychecks with no signatures on them and a whole bunch a people had to go without their $$ for the weekend because their banks wouldn't accept them. Honest mistake, but I felt soo horible. I know how it is living check to check.

Try this one on for size:

I was given the duty a few months ago of taking care of outgoing faxes. It didn't make sense to me at all because the area that the fax machine is in is restricted to certain people except the bosses, myself, and the girl who actually works in that area who is literally five feet away from the fax machine at all times (I work as the receptionist at the front desk which I'm really not supposed to leave unattended). Instead of going with common sense and giving HER the duty, it was given to me for some reason. I was expected to walk to the restriced area every few minutes to see if there were faxes to be sent out. HA!! I wasn't happy with it because the girl who works back there is always throwing her duties off on me as it is, so I'd always "forget" to see if there were faxes. What would REALLY tick me off about it though, was that the girl would literally walk past the outgoing faxes AND the fax machine to inform me that there were faxes that needed to be sent out! Unfortunately, one very important fax sat in the back for 5 hours (and, yes, the girl who works back there KNEW ABOUT IT) which was sent out too late making a client miss an opportunity at $400,000. I got into major trouble for it and didn't hear anything else for a week. Even though the fax sat literally three feet away from the girl WHO ACTUALLY WORKS IN THAT AREA with the fax machine five feet away from her, I got in trouble.
The outgoing trays for the faxes are now at my desk. I still have to walk to the back to send faxes, but I won't be getting into trouble anymore.

My biggest mistake was accepting the job when they demanded 99.9% accuracy. The stress almost killed me. Even machines don't have that kind of accuracy.
