This is a common problem with many newer engines due to manufactures recommendations of running thinner oils etc.
what happens is the oil runs down out of the valvetrain and rocker arm areas while sitting during the undriven, time when engine was sitting not running... the oil also drains out of the hydraulic lifters... so for the first couple of minutes until the oil pump gets all the oil resupplied to all the areas and all the air bubbles are pumped out...
there will be a slight tapping noise in the upper engine... this is the reason Tech like myself recommend 1-2 minutes of running the engine in park or neutral (for manual trans vehicle) before driving the vehicle out into traffic to protect valvetrain wear surfaces... even in warm weather...
nothing to worry about unless tapping doesn't go away...after a couple of minutes
also remeber to make sure tapping isn't from oil being low or the engine having low oil pressure due to worn bearings in the engine (in which case the noise wouldn't subside after a couple of minutes too)
Walt
P.S. There are some vehicles which this is very common like 1986-1992 Caravans & Voyagers with the 3.0 and 3.3 V6 engines... nearly every one you find at a used car lot start it up... for 1-2 minutes it will tick then go away...

not exactly true... depending on what kind of car it is sometimes after a car has set over nite the oil runs out of the motor, and when you start it up in the morning it will have some slight tapping noise until the oil gets fully circulating through the motor about 1 or 2 min. and it will be worse in the winter because the cold makes the oil thicker... but it is not to out of the blue my car does it and always has along with several other people i kow who have the same car.. look up info on you car and mention it to a mechanic he will tell you if it is normal for you car.

The biggest cause of that is people using oil that is thicker than it should be. Change the oil and use the thinnest recommended for your car. Thick oil takes longer to get flowing and doesn't pump up lifters as well. Thick oil also doesn't flow in as great a volume or get into tight spots as well.

it really depends what type of vehicle you are driving. my roommate had a 2000 yukon that every time you cold started the vehicle the engine knocked, and there was nothing at all wrong with the engine or vehicle, its just a characteristic of an older GM V8.
any knocking is often and should be considered a bad thing and you should have it looked at as soon as possible, i do know that you will experience such "noises" if its an older general motors product and you have nothing to worry about if that is the case.

Sounds like it might be your lifters. Change your oil and see if that helps. Ask the guy at the auto parts store what he recommends for you car and mileage. If you have a lot of miles on your vehicle, you might need thicker oil.

Sounds like the oil is not getting to the engine fat enough, or you are low on oil.
When was the last time the oil was changed - checked?

No..this could be the beginning of major engine trouble. Make sure your oil level is full first, and if it continues, get rid of the car soon.

Check your oil level. Have you had an oil change recently? If you are past due, get the oil change. If you still hear it after the oil cahnge, check your spark plugs.
