I work in a college residence office at the moment (its only temporary).

As we get closer to the school year, I'm starting to notice a disturbing pattern.

You have no idea how many parents have called us asking if there's a maid service we could recommend because their child doesn't know how to wash dishes, wash clothes, clean the bathroom, etc.

Not only that but the number of parents that call us to find out their childrens room number (we can't give it to them, its against the law. The student is an adult, that means we can only give it to the student) is staggering.

Do parents no longer believe in raising their children to be able to take care of themselves when they're an adult? No child should ever graduate high school without knowing how to turn on the washing machine.

I learned it too. Its just disturbing to have a parent and a child walk into the office and the child stays completely silent while the parent deals with everything else even though the childs an adult.

There was even one guy who said that the modem in his room was missing. I asked him if he had looked in the closet and he said no. His mother said "See? The one thing I leave you to on your own and you couldn't do it right".

Just... disturbing.

I'd hate to think that the current generation of children are going to effectively be invalids because their parents can't make them do their own work so they can grow up properly.

Parents who fail to teach their children how to cook, clean, and do laundry are retarding them to the point of abuse.

The problem is worse in boys I think... even my MIL admits never making her sons cook or clean because 'it was just easier to do it myself'.

But the problem is, parents who do this release their offspring into adulthood with no clue how to take care of themselves or their own living space.

NO EXCUSES!!!! Both MY children will grow up doing chores and learning to cook. We have a cleaning lady come very 2 weeks but the house needs care more often than that, and dang if I'm going to be doing everyone's laundry once the kids can reach the dials on the machine. Cooking together is fun, I don't understand not doing that at all.

It's not that hard, people. We just need to teach the kids the responsibility. I was vacuuming, scrubbing bathrooms, and folding laundry when I was 7. If a 7 year old can master the complexity, so can high school graduates.

You know i don't have a problem with cooking, cleaning, dusting, moping the floor only i mop the floor the old fashioned way on my hands and knees! I know there are easier ways to clean the floor but, that's just how i do it! Anyways kids both male and female should learn how to cook and clean and do laundry and stuff like that I DID!

Luckily, humans still have the capacity to *learn*.

After a bit of fumbling and floudering around, the young-adults (sic) will learn "how-to" clean the bathroom, et al.

And parents will also learn "how to" get their kids' room numbers ... (call their cell-phones?)

"maid-service"???

oh come on...
for the "terminally well-to-do", ... indolence might breed indolence
