I am an absolute beginner and I want to buy an acoustic guitar for $200 or less and I narrowed it down between a Yamaha and an Epiphone....which one do you think is better? Along the same lines, which model of the Yamaha and Epiphone is good? I read a bit about the Yamaha F310, but now I am leaning towards the Yamaha F335, as it seems newer/better and just a tiny bit pricier. I just want a guitar that I can play pop, rock, and other mainstream songs with that is reliable and sounds good. I'm also dying to learn how to play rock songs on an electric guitar so after I get good with an acoustic one, I'll probably buy an electric one in the future. All advice, comments, help is much appreciated, thanks.

Can someone tell me whether I can play something like Somewhere Over the Rainbow (rock version) on a non-electric guitar and still have it sound good? Again I know nothing about music/guitars so please share your knowledge with me.

Which one do you like the feel of better? How about the sound. Do you like one or the other? You're buying a guitar for yourself so it's very important you get the one you really like. Otherwise, you'll soon give up and put the guitar away.

They are pretty much the same. The problem is they both have laminated wood tops - the biggest factor in the quality of an acoustic is a SOLID wood top. Look for an "S" in the number. Epiphone makes a PR200S that's decent as is the Yamaha FG700S ($200). The Washburn D10S is $260 with a hard case. A solid top guitar is going to get better sounding with age - you can play it for 50 years.

I love Epiphones. I've owned three.

I own a Yamaha now.

And I still suggest "Applause" guitars. They look great, sound great, play easily, and for under $200, I honestly think it's the best. You can get an acoustic/electric (meaning you can play like a regular acoustic OR get an amp and cord and plug in like an electric...that will sound like a loud acoustic) for under $200 that sounds great. I suggest them all the time with no complaints. See if you can find one in a shop, then order off the Internet to save $. Make sure it's a reputable business.

I bought my Epiphone for £240 fifteen years ago and I've been playing it ever since. I play all sorts of stuff, including out-and-out rock songs. It sounds o.k. to me. An acoustic is a good way to build up a repertoire and learn how to strum and pick. Very important, even for a lead guitarist. Also, you can play in places like folk clubs that don't always have amplification.

I've played the F335 before, and it's a very nice guitar not only for beginners (like me), but for the money. I can't speak for Epiphone.

Sometimes, Music123.com has deals on store-brand acoustics. I just bought one a few months ago for about $65, shipped. I wanted something to sound decent, but that I didn't care if it got damaged when taking it to a friend's house, or the beach, etc. You could give them a look, too.

i don't mean to stray away from your question but if I were you I would buy an Ibanez. Since i'm not sure they sell acoustic don't buy it yet. I would go with epiphone but i don't know too much about either. And while I'm talking about electrics if you don't get an Ibanez I would recommend the Fender Starcaster. I saw one at Target a full pack for $200
