This is a problem with central planning even when the top planners are democratically elected. Let's say that it's election time and you have the option of retaining Bush. Suppose that your two main issues are unsafe imports and protection from terrorism. Further, let's say that you think that Bush has bungled the imports but is doing a fine problem on terrorism. [For the record, I don't think he's done much good on either problem.]

How do you vote?

Most people would probably vote yes and accept the bad imports.

How about another solution? Let's allow entrepreneurs to specialize in providing the service of reviewing product quality. Consumer Reports does this already. I should think that there should more competition in this area, but I believe that most people think that government is somehow capable of managing the thing.

If a company does a poor job fulfilling this responsibility, it will lose business to other companies that succeed better. You don't have to bundle product saftey and national security.

Quit relying on government for everything. It's only equipped to make promises and take your money. It's not well suited for the massive array of roles people generally expect of it.

Imports? Do you know what is in your food? Its not just the imports. You cannot rely on the government to protect you. It isn't just the Bush administration. Dems and Republicans are the same on this issue. Dems may tighten standards a little bit, but not much. There was a serious debate at the start of the Bush administration over how much mercury was safe in your drinking water. Hmmm, how about as close as we can get to NONE.

I dislike Bush intensely, but am unwilling to blame this issue on him personally.

Responsibility for assuring a foreign product's safety should lie primarily with the distributor. . . if I was WalMart, I'd want to know some redneck wasn't going to sue my pants off because little Billy Joe Bob choked on a toy bit, or grew up (more) retarded because of eating lead paint off his firetruck.

Or, better yet, the consumer could assume some responsibility! Buy American, because we have controls in place (that China does not) to assure at least a modicum of safety.

It's hard to know sometime that something is unsafe. especially when there is so much comming into this country. This one cannot be blamed entirely on the Bush admin. even though I like to blame them for everything and they should be blamed for much of what is wrong the problem is the volume of trade.

I don't think we can blame this one on Lil' Bush and his administration. Maybe the FDA, the Dept. of Agriculture and I'm not to sure to complete blame can be laid there.

I like the idea of them opening the problem up to the public though. There willingness to receive comments from us tells me they are concerned with what will make us feel safer.

Wow! That is the biggest stretch I have seen this week. Lets blame Bush for unscrupulous exporters in China.

Should we place all product recalls that happen on the shoulders of the current president? I remember some pretty big ones during the Clinton years...

“There is always a group of people that despite any evidence to the contrary believe that any bad thing that happens is the fault of the government.

These people are called democrats.

During the Clinton administration they were called republicans.” - Me

Because we are all willing to buy so much cheap stuff from outside of this country, that it would not matter which party was in office we would still be getting unsafe stuff in.

Oh please. You can't keep blaming the President for every little thing. Those same things were being imported under Clinton too. Grow Up! Blame the companies who manufacture and test these items. If you want government to control everything, you should move to a communist country.

He stood at the ports, inspected all the containers and said "let them all in, I need to give the miserable liberals more things to whine about." How about blaming the people that decided we should have free trade with China. why is it always the Bush administration?
