Police station will not give me a copy of my police report?
I went to the police station and filed out a form to get a copy of my police report for a DUI, after a week I had still not received a call that is was ready to pick up. I called the station and was told that I needed to call the prosecutors office to get it??? WTF! why was I not told this when I was thereand filed out the form for them to call me when it was ready? When I called the prosecutors office they said I need to send them a formal request and they wil lget me a copy in 7-21 days. Isn't this public info? Why am I jumping through hoops to get it. What can I do? I want it yesterday, I have already heard parts of it and its not correct? This is in WA state.

The statute does not provide for withholding the report, if you are its subject.

It may be that the DA is preparing an indictment or other legal proceeding and they are keeping it from you until you get a court order or it is provided to your lawyer as part of discovery.

It is public info. But you have to go through the right procedures to obtain public info. It sounds like somebody at the police station screwed up. Sorry, but there's not much you can do about it other than request the file from the prosecutor's office.

Guess it depends on the local rules. I had to pay $10 for a copy I needed but at least I got it right then.
