I'm looking for a modern classic. Something written in the last 10 years that you think will stand the test of time; a book that, though new and cutting-edge, has the grandiose vision of Moby Dick or the Romantic movement. Not a genre book, but one that could go on the shelf called, simply, great literature. Any suggestions?

The last 10 years? Err... that's not far enough of a stretch. If you went back 25, perhaps 30 year, then this question would be easier to answer.

IF I had to answer given the last 10 years, I'd say "The DaVinci Code" by Dan Brown.

No, it is not up to par with Moby Dick, any of the Twain or Dickens classics, but it is the best I could do given the limited time frame.

A Time for Killing by John Grisham. I'm not sure if it was written in the last 10 years but it qualifies as a classic. Very powerful read about Southern injustice and justice.

"The Glass Castle" by Jeanette Walls.
"Teacher Man" by Frank McCourt. ("Angela's Ashes" already got a Pulitzer, and this book is a real treat on its own.)
possibly "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd (haven't finished it)

And the rest I'd list are older than 10 years...

Good Q.

"Shalimar the Clown" by Salman Rushdie. A very sad story about the problems in Kashmir.

"Adventures of Kavalier and Klay" by Michael Chabon, for one. It won the Pulitzer for a reason and is actual, real literature!

I think "Neverwhere" by Neil Gaiman is amazing - it's like nothing I've ever read before. I'd certainly recommend it for your bookshelf.

Happy reading!

These have a shot, in my opinion.

Life of Pi - Martell
The Road - McCarthy
Wicked - MacGuire
