I would say that you can get very good deals from Dell and HP, especially if you use online coupons. Some online coupons can knock off as much as 20% of the list price.
You can usually find online coupons, just google dell coupon, or hp coupon.

Theirs lots of great ways to get cheap laptops.
Is 400$ too much?
Theirs a few ways to get cheap laptops:
1. Used
2. Refurbished
3. Laptop New but with only the parts you need
You may think a new laptop is going to cost at least 1000$ but you can get them for fairly decent prices. I've found whole guide on getting cheap laptops. Check it out. The links in my resources area.
Good Luck!

Depends on how little your bankroll is. Geeks.com has an Acer on sale for $399. Put in ACERDEAL for the coupon code.
If you're really cheap, have 4-6 weeks, and are willing to roll the dice on what some are saying must be a scam, you can order the Medison Celebrity for $150.
Links are below.

For a computer to do school work on I'd recommend that you watch the sales on the Dell website. http://www.dell.com
Set up an "account" and you'll also be notified of their short term sales. Some of the sales are only for one day so it's worth doing. There are some really good sales on the Inspirons.
Hope this helps.

Try getting Compaq, HP, or Acer. They all have good computers at an inexpensive cost. If you live in Canada, get them from the Future Shop; way cheaper.
