I have to recommend that you go for one of the classics. There's a reason they are famous; they're amazingly good. Some examples include:
1984
Catcher in the Rye
Of Mice and Men
Animal Farm
Tom Sawyer
The Scarlet Letter
etc.

The Sugar Cookie Murder. Pretend You Don't See Her.
The Cat Who Saw Red. How The West Was Won. It's historical fiction based on history. Sorry, I haven't read any Stephen King or Jeffery Deaver books, lately. But if you can find it, another you should read is Chance McGraw. Also
Invitation To Murder

Try with book "BATTLEFIELD EARTH: A SAGA OF THE YEAR 3000" by L. Ron Hubbard (publisher: Bridge Publication, Inc.) There are two books (Part 1 and 2) and Hubbards style is much different than King's or Brown's. I'm sure you'll not be disappointed. Veradisca & Best Regards, Neven.

Try Robert Ludlum (Bourne Identity, Supremecy, Ultimatum - nothing like the movies, Scarlotti Inheritence, etc.)
Jack Higgins - his earlier works (Eagle Has Landed, A Prayer for the Dying, Storm Warning, etc.)
Tom Clancy (Without Remorse, Red Storm Rising, Rainbow Six, etc.)

Servants of the Twilight by Dean R. Koontz is really an excellent book. It takes place in California, and is about this woman and her 6 year old son. They are getting bugged by this crazy old woman in a parking lot. She just screams at the little boy that she knows what he is and who he is. Next thing Christine knows is her only son is targeted by this group of religious fanatics and he (the six year old) is branded as the Antichrist and they want to kill him. So the mom and kid are on the run and these people are everywhere trying to get this little boy. Its 418 amazing pages of this chase by the fanatics to get this little boy. Really good, I couldn't put it down. Also by Dean R. Koontz, The Funhouse, that was a good one.
I think anything by John Saul is great, my favorite book by him is Suffer the Children, really excellent.

Try The Obsidian Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory. It's a fantasy epic with some pretty scary and gruesome parts. Great story, great characters.

I like stephen king and love james patterson. Maybe you will like him too. I'd start with something like Kiss the Girls which is a little of the freaky side, but basically a book in his famous Alex Cross detective series. I also like the women's detective club series (1st to die, 2nd chance, 3rd degree, etc.)

There are hundreds of good fiction authors. Tom Clancy is a top favorite of mine, especially Hunt for Red October and Patriot Games. Other good authors include John Nance (aviation fiction), John Grisham (law), and James Huston (his books usually include a little Christianity, but very good). These are my favorite lists. Hope this helps you. =)
