This is kind of a tricky question; I will do my best to answer it:

Babe Ruth originally broke the single season homerun record in 1919 when he hit 29. The previous record was 27 (Ned Williamson in 1884).

The next year (1920 - His first year with the Yankees) he broke his own record with 54 homeruns (quite a jump).

Then again the next year (1921) he broke that mark with 59 homeruns.

Then in 1927 he broke the record again with 60 homeruns, which remained the record until Roger Maris broke it in 1961.

If you are talking about career homeruns Ruth broke Roger Connor's fairly long standing career mark of 138 in 1921. Of course Ruth ended up with 714 homeruns by the end of his career in 1935 which held up until 1974 when Hank Aaron broke the record.

You can see how he revolutionized the game... in 1920 the Philadelphia A's were the only TEAM with as many homeruns as him. Not too bad for a guy that probably could've been a Hall of Fame pitcher.
