Himmler was the highest ranking Nazi official to visit Auschwitz (in March 1941) and no doubt reported back to Hitler on his plans for expansion and to turn Auschwitz-Birkenau into an extermination camp.

No, Hitler never visited any of the camps. The operation of the camps must have come to his attention, he just chose to ignore it by delegating one of his minions (Himmler) to oversee.
