Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens. There is a scene near the end of the novel in which one of the characters seems to be dying....it was bitter sweet. The character I spoke of is my favorite character in all of literature.
The character (Eugene Wrayburn) has previously been indolent, lazy, and somewhat arrogant. He is an upper-class barrister, who pretty much doensn't give a rip about anything. But after meeting a lower-class woman, he finds himself falling in love with her. She likes him too, but is afraid of what will happen to her reputation (and perhaps his) if they see each other. Then, a man named Bradley Headstone who is a school master, and also in love with this woman, trries to kill Eugene. The woman saves Eugene, but he is dying anyway. And then asks that she be brought to him, and if she will marry him. It is really sad. But I love it.

i remember watching the movie, "Yeh Xian" in the 1st grade. wow, you brought me back. i think the book that made me cry was, "The Elephant Man" i forgot the author's name, but it was a sad book. Also, the book, "Night" by holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel. I suggest that book for everyone.

"Moreta" by Anne McCaffrey.
You have to be a McCaffrey fan to appreciate Moreta's sacrifice for the sake of Pern. But you don't have to be a fan to appreciate how selfless she was in the events leading up to her demise.
