Don't listen to the people asking if your car is front or rear wheel drive, they don't know what they are talking about. As mentioned by several people, most of your braking is done by the front brakes, but it extremely important for the balance of the car the the brakes both function properly. If have no braking power on your rear wheels you might easily lose control under hard braking. Also, your rear brakes are usually also your parking brake, so if you have nothing there, they will not function. You should be able to look (or ask at a shop) and see how much material is left on the pads, another way to tell if something needs to be replaced: most pads have squeekers on them. This means they will squeal when the pad is dangerously low letting you know that they need to be replaced. Also, a generally the front pads need to be replaced twice as often as the rear pads, depending on how hard you drive.

If you do not have enough cash to pay for both front and rear brakes, I would replace the front brakes first. The braking force of the front and rear brakes are not 50/50. Vehicles will have a braking force distribution of 60-70% front end. Try to find a way to do both front and rear simply because it would be the safest, but if only one can be done for now, I would service the front first.

The front brakes do the majority of the work, but if the rear brakes are not working properly, they can adversely effect the life and performance of the front brakes.
Get the front done first and the rear asap. Make sure that it is safe to drive in the mean time, though.

80-90% of the braking is done by the front brakes, but it is important to have everything working properly. If you are metal to metal in the rear, it might cause the rear wheels to lock up which will throw the car out of control. I wouldn't take any chances, but that's my opinion. If you get into an accident and it is determined that your car is mechanically faulty and especially if you knew it was, prepare for a big lawsuit. Good luck.

well, the real question is are the drum brakes on the back
if yes fix the front first it is has DISK brakes wit the pads
drum brakes suck thats why disk brakes are starting to become the standard on most vehicles because they have better stopping ability.
and ABS is standard on most vehicles now too.
if it has disk brakes all around buy them all at the same time
it cant be more than 36.00 for 2 sets of cheap ones to get by for now.
good luck

FRONT FIRST
70-80% of your stopping power is done through the front brakes. I drove a beater for a while with no rear brakes and was fine.

front brakes do most of the stopping. Plus the front brakes can effect the steering while braking. I would take care of the fronts first.

It depends on which was in worn more, ask them to let you know how thick the break pads are on each the front and the back. Also depends if your car is rear-or front- wheel drive. Can you update with more info? (If you cant update, just know to replace which ever is worn more, that will show you which is more worn out-obviously, but also which is used most)
