After he crashed into a pole. Was he scared of getting into trouble with the NFL? Obviously, if he wasnt in trouble with the law before, he is now. So, do you think he will or should be suspened? I dont know the whole story so feel free to fill in the gaps for me. If the new commissioner doesnt ease up will we see more cover ups like this? If it was a cover up.

He was probably drunk or high. This way he could go home until it wears off. With the current commish being stricter and actually having players be somewhat responsible he probably though getting a DUI would get him suspended.

He says he panicked. Unless he admits to being drunk or high we probably won't know for sure what happened. I doubt that he will get suspended, but if he does something else, I bet he will. He left the scene of an accident, which is a crime, so now he's got one offense. I think the conduct policy being aimed at repeat offenders is a good idea. Guys that constantly get in trouble shouldn't be in the NFL. No matter how people feel about kids having celebrities and athletes as role models it's a fact of life. And while no one can force pop divas and movie starlets to behave, the NFL is in a position to tell guys who get in trouble repeated they can't play if the keep it up. I hope Goddell doesn't ease up.

Chances are high that he was drunk when the crash happened. Thus causing the crash and causing him to panic and leave the scene. Although he will have to face the charges of leaving the scene and reckless driving, there is now no proof that he was intoxicated (if that is true), which would cause worse punishment.

He claims he called the police to report the car stolen because he was panicking, but the police have no record of that call. If he did call, it was in an attempt to cover up the fact he was the one involved in the accident.

The cover up was not the result of trying to avoid punishment by the NFL, but rather to avoid harsher legal punishment for a DWI.

Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs said he panicked after crashing his new Lamborghini along a highway early Monday morning and initially reported his car stolen after abandoning the mangled vehicle.

Speaking to reporters after practice on Tuesday, Briggs said he called a tow truck after leaving the scene and then reported his 2007 Murcielago was stolen.

"When it happened, the first thing I did was, obviously, I panicked," Briggs said. "I didn't want there to be a big scene there. And so I left the scene. When I left, I called the tow truck. I also was startled, and I called to report that my car was stolen. Within probably 10 minutes, I called back and accepted responsibility for what I did because it was ridiculous in the first place."

Illinois State Police said they have no record of Briggs reporting a stolen vehicle. They did say that Briggs placed a 9-1-1 call at around 4 a.m. Monday, after initially saying he did not call police until sometime between 8 a.m. and 9.

But Master Sgt. Luis Gutierrez said Briggs gave "no indication of his car being stolen" during either call.

Illinois police found the abandoned vehicle, which had hit a light pole and a concrete bridge support, alongside the Edens Expressway on the city's North Side around 3:15 a.m.

Briggs was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, a misdemeanor, and was given traffic citations for failure to give immediate notice of an accident and improper lane usage, when he met with police on Monday afternoon. He was released after posting $100 bond and is scheduled to appear Oct. 4 in a Cook County court.

Leaving the scene carries a maximum 364 days in jail and a $1,000 fine, according to Illinois Master Sgt. Luis Gutierrez.

No other cars were involved in the incident and no one was with Briggs, he said.

Briggs said he was relieved no one was hurt after he lost control of the car and apologized to the organization and the fans during his brief address to the media.

He answered one question about whether the incident changed him, saying, "It did change me, absolutely. I'm very lucky to have made it out the way that I did, very lucky. I appreciate every day. The first thing I did when I got back here was hug every one of my teammates and tell them that I love them because you never know what's going to happen."

Last I heard he DIDN'T. Oh sure HE SAYS he called 911 and said it was stolen(and don't you love how he called the TOW TRUCK first, like the cops wouldn't find THAT out) BUT the police said there was no record of that call. Why? Because it NEVER HAPPENED. Maybe since then the police said there was a call but I didn't hear about that.

I doubt he will be suspended. He was charged with a misdemeanor and two traffic citations. He may have to sit a game but nothing more than that. DUI's and drug related offenses usually get you a 4 game suspension so he was smart to flee the scene.

What legal troubles he has now doesn't compare to the troubles a DUI would cause him.
