I am not asking who you think is overrated; someone could dislike the Beatles, but easily acknowledge their influence.

I'm curious to know if anyone thinks there is someone that does not deserve the credit for influencing musicians that he/she/they currently receive.

Steve : That's cool. I gave you a thumbs up because you gave a fair answer. I'm not that closed-minded to realize that not everyone loves KISS.

Cat : You can only take so much...

I totally agree with you & Rachel. There are a few of the artists considered influential that I don't care for, but that doesn't mean I can deny their influence on others.

I feel bad chiming in to say this, because I don't have an answer. I've been thinking about this for a while, and hopefully I can come back at some point with something.

My first pick would be Sublime, although I need to be careful because my answer could easily lapse into the dreaded "O" word. I guess I have always been of the belief that they got way too much credit for everything. Yet, I cannot name one band who they truly influenced.

When talking about Manson, you have to separate the man from the music. The person (the former Brian Warner) is as vile a human as there is. His early music though was influential and lived up to what rock is all about, that being a shock to the system.

I'm going to choke. People are saying Bob Dylan? That's just plain wrong. Like Deke said, if you don't like the guy then you don't like the guy. But you can't say he hasn't influenced music.

I don't really have an answer. I think most the artists who are widely considered influential have earned it.

1) I don't think the Rolling Stones did anything the Beatles didn't do first.... and better.

2) If KISS had not worn make-up and had huge production values, all we'd remember is "Rock-N-Roll All Night", and "Beth".

3) And I'd say the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but I think they stopped influencing artists when they stopped playing funk.

Very good question: So much of the "new music" is perceived to be influential, when in fact it is a rehashing of old material....
Pete Wentz of Fall out Boy is likely overrated...we'll see!

Bono
Bob Geldoff
Kurt Cobain
Radiohead
Coldplay

The top two are considered influential in more than just music, and I am so sick of hearing about them and 'what they've done for the world'!

(I'm probably going to get tons of "thumbs down" for this but....)
Kurt Cobain: How can a deceased person influence music today - beyond the grave? He committed suicide....??? Whenever there is discussion over the "Seattle sound" or grunge, his name or Nirvana always seems to supercede other great bands such as Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, etc.

Mind you, I love the music of Nirvana. I just don't get it.

I think that Elvis was WAY over rated. He ws just not that good. He is the first pop idol, and we know those folks have no real talent.
