They can absolutely smile that young. It comes down to if they know why they're doing it or not or if they are just fine tuning those little facial muscles. Typically around 1-2 months babies start to smile because something HAS amused them. Your friends baby is halfway to a month so she could very well start noticing things she thinks are funny or interesting to her! Either way you have to LOVE baby smiles!

Its a reflex at that age not a social smile. Babies learn to smile in a social context around 6 weeks. I think my baby really started to smile at around 8 weeks.

Its not normal for them to smile as a reaction to you, its not an expression of emotion until theyre around 2 months old and have that concept.

But they can smile, usually because of gas or something like that.

They can, but not because they are happy. The muscle work the same way as when we ourselves smile or laugh, however, the emotion is not yet developed in a new born. So when you see the baby smile it is because there is a tensing of the muscles, usually due to gas or a bowel movement.

i watched a national geopgraphic documentary about babies in the womb, and they smile in the womb! but they often don't smile shortly after they're born due to being under so much stress, it's a whole new environment for them! they need to adjust before they feel like smiling.
