Alan Villiers (1903-82) sailed in several of the last great sailing ships of the 20th century, and wrote some autobiographical accounts of his voyages. I have found a list of all his books (web page below). Anything that he also wrote about ships of the 19th century would be very reliable, too, because of his first-hand experience of similar ships.

Hi there.
I would start with "Moby Dick" by Herman Melville and "Master and Commander" by Patrick O'Brien for well researched recreations of life on such ships.
O'Brien also provides a bibliography in his books and it is from there that you will get to the authentic source material.
Good luck, Steve.

Amazon have a selection of factual books regarding the clippers, giving details of the plans as well as historical data on the ships themselves

It might be too narrow, Theodore Roosevelt wrote book ,' The Naval War of 1812'.

Teddy was not a sailor, but he did have relatives in England on his wife's side of the family who were that helped him in his research of the topic. It is agreeded to be a balanced view of this subject.

I have not read it, but it is considered a must read for anyone interested in Naval warfare of that peroid.

Try any of the books by Stan Hugill. He was a Liverpudlian seafarer who wrote about every aspect of his life before the mast
