Who is the Volturi and what do they do? From Twilight Series? Might contain spoilers.?

I'm a huge fan of the Twilight Series. I jsut finished reading Eclipse last night and I'm still a little fuzzy about the Volturi. I know it has been explained in the book but I could use some clearing up?

What do they do? And why did they come to the clearing during the fight? (The part with the young vampire Bree)

Volturi are vampire liders. They all the rules and keep all the vampires in line.

The Volturi is the head of all the Vampires. They are the ones that make the rules. In eclipse, they went to the clearing because they were going to handle the problem about the newborns going out of control.

They are the head vampire family of all the vampires. They're like vampire royals. They basically make all the rules and keep all the vampires in line.

They came to the clearing because they were going to "handle" the newborn vampires who were killing everything in sight.

They are vampire royalty. They make sure that it is not discovered that vampires are real. They came to the clearing because the newborns were ravaging seattle and making headlines about it. The newborns were not following the rules and so they came to kill them so no one would find out about vampires. Oh, and that was only the voltui's guard that came. I hope that helps.

they are kindof like the vampire police. they came to the clearing in order to handle the situation that victoria had created. all of those killings were gaining a lot of notice and they can't risk having people find out about vampires. it just so happens that the cullens and quilutes took care of them first.
