It's called "felting" and yes you can make many toys like felt animals. You will need some felting needles to work the sweater material into your shapes. Start with a ball of sweater then add your additional sweater yarn to form the animals.
Here's a link to learn the basics of felting.

Rather than toys you can braid a beautiful little throw rug for their room. If you don't have enough sweaters for the project you can probably pick some up at a thrift store. Its a nice hobby and they can help. It becomes a "family rug" and a fun thing to do. ''Thought number 2. If the colors are Christmas colors you can cut the fabric with pinking shears into 2x2 squares. Get a straw wreath, Phillip's screwdriver. Push each square with the aid of the screwdriver into the wreath all around and you can make a focal point of a decoration or perhaps the kids picture. Again the children can help with the project and again its a "family project' and fun and amazing how pretty they can be. Have fun.

Hi honey, If you don't have any joy finding a pattern for a toy for your little girl, there are lots of charities such as this one: http://www.lostcatsbrighton.org.uk/ that would be really grateful. There are a few that knit blankets and baby clothes for war torn countries too. You'll have to pay the postage, but if it floats your boat you'll be doing something vital with your old woolens. I do.

first put each one into its own pillow case, then wash them in hot water with a bit of detergent, and a pair of old jeans. then put them in the dryer. You now have nicely felted sweater, ready to cut and stitch. I have made pillows, flower pins, and a pocket book out of felted sweaters, and I think that toys are a great idea. I also think they would make great draft stoppers.

If you can still unravel them you can wash and re-use the wool.
We used to have sweaters made from wool like that when I was a child. You could not see the difference with new wool.
If you have unraveled you can use the wool like new wool, use all patterns you can find.

Machine-wash the old woolens in HOT to "full" them. This is similar to felting. The result can then be used like felt for toys or for vests, purses or whatever and can be conveniently re-cleaned by machine-washing thereafter. :-)

if you are crafty, cut squares out of your sweaters and sew down the ends so they will not unravel.... then sew those squares together and make blankets for your little girls dolls or, if you have enough sweaters, do the same thing and make a blanket for her bed...
