I worked for an ex-colleague on a part-time basis (may be an hour for a day) . She used to pay after every two months. Our project has ended 1.5 months back and it is almost 3 months and did not receive any payment for the hours that i worked. We may again start on another project in couple of months. She also bought a house recently. She only owes me a few thousands dollars. Is it a good idea to ask for the payment now or wait for another month? If so, what is the best way to ask for it?

Don't be afraid to confront your employer about money owed for work that has been completed. A few thousand dollars? I would have asked for my money a long time ago. The best way to ask is when she asks you to come to work, ask her for your money. The language or tact is irrelevant. It is your money, not hers. So however you ask for it is the right way to do it.

She is odviously not a very smart business person. Im in the business that I have to pay different vendors all the time.

Hell if they dont get paid the day before its done, its paid when they show up if the project. I get a bill that says net 30 I said no she will cut you a check right now.

Why do you do this? When I call and say I need this yesterday, I get it yesterday. Always pay your vendors and she should know this if she wants to be successful. I would call her and say I was wondering if there were problems with the project? If she says no its going fine. Say Im just wondering normally you pay me net 30 and its been 3 months. You have always paid at a certain time in the past so I was concerned there was a problem.

Thats all you have to say. She will be embarrased and you will get your check. But its not harsh and its easy to explain. You put it back on her without accusing her of anything.

As I said before I pay my vendors upon delivery. But I pay alot of different people. I got a phone call from someobody I use 2-3 times a month. About 6 months after he did this commercial appraisal. He finally told me he didnt get paid. I had given him 20 checks or more since then. I was mortified. He said you werent in the office. I said why didnt you tell me? I can get that its hard to ask for money. I just totally forgot, I just assumed it was paid. I owed him 3,000 and didnt know it. I was calling him all the time for rush jobs and I still owed him money. Everybody can forget.

Just ask. You have been working as an independant contractor the same I hire other people as well.

You earned the money so don't be shy. Ask for your payment by saying something like --- " X, I know you have been very busy with the new house and SSS so you probably don't realize that I have not received payment for the Y hours I worked " See what her response is and if need be say -- "Well I really could use the money right now as I have something coming due "

If this doesn't trigger the money then I would REALLY reconsider working for the person in the future.

Good luck...

That money is rightfully yours, i wouldnt be afraid to ask for it. If you feel uncomfortable, trying bringing it up in conversation like saying, "did you see that starbucks coffee price went up again? Im going to be broke before you know it!, hey speaking of which, do you by chance have my paycheck for that project a couple month back" This is the best i got, its what i would do, hope this helps.

You could just send her an itemized bill showing what she owes. Or if you see her frequently, write up the itemized bill and hand it to her saying something like "here's the detail on the outstanding payments for our last project". Don't be embarrassed - SHE is the one who should be.
