Hello, 18, just looking for a new car. Found a 2000 BMW 318i from a dealer for 6500, sorry, pound key doesn't work!
Anyway, the insurance will be taken care of, the cost of the car will be taken care of but I'm just wondering if it's such a good idea, I'm more worried about the fact that as it's not a hatchback and it's rwd does anyone think that'll cause a lot of problems? I've only ever driven hatchbacks and fwd, I love this car to pieces, it's just quite sexy but there's also a 307 I found for the same price, slightly newer, less miles etc. I'd be happy to have that but the BMW is just calling to me..pretty stuck here, someone please help!

Go for the Beemer. I'm jealous. My first car was a rusty Vauxhall Chevette.

I hate to burst your bubble, but it's really not the smartest choice of first car. My good friend purchased an Audi 80 Sport when he was your age for a similar price. It took him less than six months to total it and nearly kill himself.

No matter how good a driver you think you are, you still have a lot to learn at your age. There is a good chance that you will get into some near misses, and some scrapes and bumps.

Owning a BMW will make all of those dings very costly indeed. Also maintenance costs will be very high. So it really isn't the most sensible choice. It would be smarter to buy Toyota, Honda or Nissan.

But I understand the allure of the BMW. It is a wonderful car to drive. I wouldn't worry about the lack of a hatch back. By British standards it is a fairly large car.

I just bought my first BMW, and I too was worried about RWD. But I've driven mine in some horrible weather and with the traction control the RWD was not an issue. In fact it handled better than my last car that was FWD.

That said, I don't know how the traction control was back in '00. And I've never driven my car yet in the snow or ice. But most cars do poorly in those conditions.

I take it the 307 is a Peugeot. I've been gone from the UK since 2000, and I am not familiar with all the cars now. It's probably a more sensible car that will be cheaper to maintain.

Man don't listen to a word of negativity from these people, in my opinion I would get the bmw, and I will tell you why. Number 1 there totally sexy, 2 the handling is out of this world, absolute luxury at all levels, 3 it's like driving on a cloud, 4 great engine and electronics, 5 perfect features both interior and exterior.

Yo can upgrade this baby any way you want and it can look a million different ways. your concern with rwd is a valid one, but this just means that you have more control over avoiding accidents because the turn of the steering wheel doesnt make the front end of the car move on a dime. hatchbacks are for old people so I would stay away from them. I just got my bmw and I have had a smile on my face the whole entire time. great luxury! the cost of gas and repairs are no different than any other car, especially if you have a good non bmw mechanic who works on bmw's ;) II hope this make you choose the right choice. take it easy playboy.

Personally I'd go for the BMW. That car isn't a race car or anything, but it's a great piece of engineering. Why would RWD and sedan be a problem? RWD is significantly better than FWD, and hatch's are...well, not as good looking as a sedan or coupe to say the least. Go for it! Just make sure you understand that if you get in a wreck, they're fairly expensive to fix.

Words of advise from dad who has sorted out 4 kids with first car.

If you want the beemer .... fine.
but get a 6 cyl , the 4 cyl ones are a pain in the ********
DON'T DON'T touch the froggy thing.

Now if you love the beemer, please remember you always do some damage to a first car. You will perhaps reverse into something, or scratch the side on a gate post.

So,why not get a good cheapie and smoke about in it for 6 months and damage that one.
Learn to drive a banger and then the beemer will seem even better still!

Good luck and happy motoring.

I would go for the 318i . It isnt thier performance model , but a great car and most things are pretty easy to fix yourself . Yes there is more maintanence ,but learn how to do most the routine maintence yourself and it isnt too bad on your wallet .
Do you want a car that needs little maintanence but has no handling or personality than get a toyota . If you want a car you actually love to drive but have to work on it once in a while then get the BMW .

Yeah i had the same problem when i wanted my first car, sadly i didnt get the bmw i ended up with an old astra. For your 1st car get something that if you prang, bump or total you wont be too pissd about. Get to know your roads and when you feel comfortable enough to get that Bm go for it. Use any excess money customising it to give your 1st car a personal feel. Ive had 3 cars since my first and glad i can now drive in style and feel that ive earned it. Good luck and remember mirror, signal and foot down

my first car was a 1991 bmw e36 325,took me ages to save for it,(didnt pass my test till i was 21!)it was 10 yrs old when i got i had it for 6 yrs and it didnt give me any probs whatsoever.i now have an m3 (i love bmws)in my opinion the 318 is underpowered but since your 18 and its your first car go for it they are great cars built well and handle perfectly, rwd isnt a problem unless you get silly when its wet. You're so lucky someone else is paying even more reason to get it!Good luck

lol just a quick thought for you. when my kid brother passed his test he went and bought a old escort it was a 96 i think , he scraped the side gettin it of the sellers drive, and put some nice deep scratches in the wing , then the next day while executing a 3 point turn, smashed the headlight o0n a skip, yes a skip , then just to finis it off less than a week later while reversing into a parking space , decided to crunch a womans bull bars on her mercedes ml500,resulting in him not being able to open his boot,, so plz think obn before you buy the bmw , it would be a shame for you to start banging and scraping it , but good luck anyway

I would go with the BMW as long as it is a decent car(not flood, accidents, etc). Get it checked out by an independent mechanic. For 6500 thats a steal!
