Tybardy - He retired knowing he was the best ever. You dont need your name in a records book to know that.
To answer the question at hand.. I agree with Ty and say Barry Sanders, simply because his game was beautiful.. With the offensive line that he had to play behind, and still had the ability to do what he did, he is the best RB of all time, hands down. The only competition he would have had, had he not gotten injured so early in his career, would have been Bo Jackson. He too was fun to watch, but in a totally different way. He was physical and fast, if he couldnt run around you, he'd run through you. (and did that on more than a few occasions.)

Past or present?
Presently, I like Troy Polamalu from the Steelers. He's fast, a hard hitter, and can generally play anywhere on the field defensively.
Past players I like:
Dick "Night Train" Lane (CB, Rams)--This guy single-handedly got "clothesline" tackling outlawed in the NFL. He was intense, quick, and tough. He also set, and still holds, the record for interceptions by a rookie cornerback (14) and is third on the all time interception list with 68. In my opinion he is one of the best CBs to ever play the game. Lane is also a Hall of Famer.
Mike Singletary (LB, Bears)-- If ever the word "intense" could be used to describe a single player, it would be used to describe Mike Singletary. The heart of a Chicago Bears defense that used to eat teams for breakfast, Singletary was a 10 time Pro Bowler and an 8 time All Pro and a 1 time Super Bowl champion. He was quick, intense, and hit like a runaway truck. Singletary is also a member of the Hall of Fame.
Jack Lambert (LB, Steelers)--The ultimate intimidating linebacker in the 70s. Lambert played on the Steelers famous "Steel Curtain" defense from 1974 to 1984, including the 1976 version considered to be the greatest defense of all time (they held opponents to a mere 138 pts for the season and over the course of the last nine games they held opponents to just 2 touchdowns while turning in 5 shutouts). When Lambert played he was intense, fast, intimidating, smart, and wrecked people. Lambert was an 9 time Pro Bowler, 8 time All Pro, and a 4 time Super Bowl champion. He was also named to the NFL's 75th Anniversary team, the NFL's All Time Team, and to both the NFL's 1970s All Decade Team and the 1980s All Decade Team. Lambert is also a Hall Of Famer.

Absolutly has to be Brett Favre. No one in the league can catch him. He has started every single game for the last how many years? He plays every game, and he never gives up. He has the loyalty and perseverence of a true great. He is a legend already, and it will be a very sad day when he retires.
I should probably add that of the retired players, Romanowski is my favorite. He is so intense, and so good. Watching him play is awesome.

retired or active?
to biast of an opinion... I like lots of players... Berry Sanders because no one could ever move like him, i think if he didnt retire early he would have been the best RB of all time.
or what about Jerry Rice, in my opinion the greatest wide reciever of all time, he was just amazing.
there is Joe Montana. He has power, he has accuracy, he had AMAZING clock managment. I mean what he could do inside 2 minutes was nothing short of amazing. (not to mention 4 super bowl victories)
and what about Deon Sanders, greatest corner back ever to play.. i mean that guy ran in so many friggin defensive touchdowns!!
i mean i could go on and on and on...
active.. i might say LaDanian... but i think thats a typical pick. I do like the prospect of Matt Lienart.. I think he is going to shape up to be the next GREAT nfl QB.
fun question though

Current or all-time?? First off the Redskins are my favorite team. I love them ahead of everyone else. That being said. Current fave would be Brett Favre. He is just so damn fun to watch. He is tough and will take on anyone. He is a true gunslinger in football terms. I even love watching his interviews.
All time favorite is Darrell Green. He just amazed me on and off the field. I could watch the guy play forever.

Brett Favre by far! He is a throwback to the glory days of football. The game will not be quite the same after he steps down. :(
