To avoid panty lines and because they feel sexy. They make liners for them... but if you mean during a period, most of us use tampons anyway. I usually switch to a full-back in that time, but it isn't necessary at all.

The purpose of wearing a g-string is so you don't get panty lines.

A G string is what a stripper wears to keep from getting arrested for full nudity. that's the main purpose. also it gives the customer some place to put dollar bills.

they are good if you don't want your panty line showing but you don't like not wearing underwear. and they are really cute sometimes and comfortable too(especially if youre prone to wedgies). why does underwear need to cover the hips? and if you use napkins instead of tampons, just don't wear them when youre on your period.

I think thongs are much more comfortable than "regular" underware. Also you never have to worry about pantylines showing through.
As far as sanitary products....I use tampons. Problem solved :)
