Van Halen defined a new hard-rock sound coming out of Cali with what was the revolutionary gutar work of Eddie Van Halen and the incredible stage presence of David Lee Roth. The first release may be the best debut album from the 1970s, with the tours being hottest ticket for years and redefined the utter decadence of a rock band rolling into a city.
Def Leppard is known for songwriting and studio work, which follows a pop music motif more than hard-rock. But its definitive wall of sound and numerous "concert" videos on MTV arguably made them the most popular "heavy metal" act in the 1980s.
I give the nod to Van Halen and the current tour will show that their popularity is as great now as it was back in the day.
