i am asking this question for my cousin, about 2 weeks ago she found out she was pregnant, even though she had just finsihed a very light period, we went to the hospital who confirmed she was about 5 weeks pregnant, then last week she had some light bleeding (Spotting) We went to A & E and they ran some blood and urine tests and said everything was fine. Two days later she was due to a dating scan, but when she went the doctor said he could see the sac, but the baby hadn't grown since 5 weeks and she should be 8 weeks, he then done an internal examination and said that she had had a miscarriage and to wait a week for heavy bleeding and stomach cramps, and to go back to the hospital in a weeks time for blood tests. Has anyone experienced anything like this or shouls she get a second opinion?

I had this happen with my first pregnancy. I had light bleeding when I was around 5 weeks and though my levels indicated I was pregnant, when I went for the ultrasound there wasn't a viable fetus.

The Doctor had me wait to see if my body would purge itself without medical intervention, which it did. I didn't end up needing a D&C however I was warned that it was a possibility.

Once the bleeding started I went back in, they drew blood and saw that my numbers had plummeted which confirmed a spontaneous abortion (which is the medical term for a miscarriage).

At 8 weeks they should have seen the baby in the sac and a heartbeat. It does look like she miscarried, especially if it was confirmed she was 5 weeks along 3 weeks ago.

Im afraid things don't look good. If the baby hasn't grown and she has had some spotting then I would suggest that her body is preparing its self to terminate the pregnancy.

Was there a heart beat on this scan?? if so then I would get another option if not then I would have to say that she did have a miscarriage.
