Good advice here above me C-Ham.
You can also go to cnet.com and downloads.
If you don't have a good windows cleaner I'd get one.
Ccleaner is a good freeware, I also use Eusing windows washer.
You should also have a good registry cleaner. Eusing also has one that's easy to use. It removes all the stray fragments from updates and file deletions that bog down your system.
Look to upgrade RAM as well. It's something easy to do and allows your programs to open easier.
I'd also recommend Mozilla's Firefox as your internet program. It's faster, and easier to use, and the tab options and add on's are very superior to IE in my opinion.
Plus, less virus nasties are around. It's more secure at the present time.

You may want to defragment the computer. When you do this, you are freeing up some valuable space on the computer and it'll also run faster, too. It could take up to 10 hours to do, but it will be worth the wait (depending onto how bad it is).

You can go to task bar at bottom and right click, open task manager and end all programs you are not using. You may not have enough ram/memory. What operating system are you using. How much ram, hard drive space available? Virus and spy ware checking can slow your computer down as well as Internet connection type.
Hope this helps

Try running antivirus and anti-spyware programs. You could be bogged down with spyware or you could have a virus.

You may need to do some hardware updates such as adding memory. Or if your computer is really old then it might be time to buy a new one.

Well get rid of crapware and trialware. Then schedule error checkin then if you want to get seroius and change registry values and such look for tweaks on the internet. I have my comp tweaked out and its so fast.

And if it actually takes 5 mins consider upgrading or buying new comp.
