Windows Media Player uses a DVD codec installed by other software. It can't play DVDs on it's own.

Google "VLC" and download that. It can play DVDs.

Windows Media Player requires an external codec in order to play.

External Codecs are needed to play audio video files on media player

VLC Video Lan Client is a free media player. It can play different media formats including divx, mpg, asf, wmv and dvd. It does not require codecs (software to allow decoding of video streams) to be installed. VLC has its own codecs to decode video.

1. Download/purchase a DVD Player software. Don't worry about codecs, all DVDs are coded using the same codec - any DVD Player supports it...

2. Also, if you update your Windows Media Player, it will be able to play DVDs too. (Help -> Check for Updates... on WMP menu should do it).

K-lite Codec Pack is the solution if you have any problem with codec. You can download it for free here http://j.mp/1kl9vrf

If you are unable to watch video or you can't open any files (avi, mp4, divx, etc...) it's very likely that your computer doesn't have right codecs. You need to install K-lite Codec Pack to fix the issue.
