It seems the costumes that people are looking for have absolutely no baring on the spiritual message of the festival.

Mark: I don't where you got the idea that Hallows means relic. The true definition is to make sacred or honour as holy.

Absilliscious: Halloween is not a holiday in Britain. It is a festival.

Just ban the whole thing, it's a bloody joke sending kids to other people's houses for sweets. I HATE HALLOWEEN and no I don't care if you call me a miserable sod.

Well Halloween derived its name from the word hallows, meaning relics but has a connotative attachmnt with death. So basically halloween is a commemoration day of deathly relics, including ghosts and monsters. When you dress up in Halloween, you commemorate those deathly relics or hallows by pretending to be them. Also, halloween in a way is a mock up of imaginary monsters and beings. It's a good way of having fun since after all, people love scaring other people. SO if you wanna take a break and enjoy once in a while and scare some scared folks, dress up your best scary halloween costume in halloween.

Dressing up lets you forget about the world and be somebody else for a little bit. Its always interesting to what idea people come up with as their costume as well. Holidays are about coming together and enjoying no matter which one your talking about.

Me~ its a family tradition that even parents dress up and take their kids trick or treating. I love that my parents were involved and I am passing on the tradition.
Plus I throw a Costume Halloween party every year and its fun.

All Hallows Eve.

The night after Halloween was all hallows day, the day when saints and good spirits wandered the earth.
The daemons, obviously, wanted to get a little last minute chaos in before the good guys get to earth.

People dressed up to confuse the spirits, making them think that they were spirits and not people, hoping to avoid the mischief.

People dress up for halloween because its a fun, party, sex night, let loose girl

its the only fun holiday in the US, thats not about spending time with annoying relatives, buying presents and being forced to eat and pretend to be nice.

Because America doesn't have
SPIRITUAL holidays!! We don't all openly celebrate anything religious, so the only holidays that are celebrated throughout America are comercial, like Valentine's day. It's AMERICAN tradition to give Haloween the way we do, and not the way you have described....perhaps people do celebrate that way, but in America, the majority will always be comercial.

Halloween is when witches and goblins used to come out of hiding and the kids love to dress up.

Because it's fun.

Orgininally it was done so that malevolent wandering spirits wouldn't recognize people. So people can go out and mingle with the spirits and not have any unwanted energy attached to them.

Hmm.... you sound surprised.

Look at how commercialized other holidays have become... Valentine's Day, Christmas, Easter...

Besides, dressing up is fun.
