There are a couple of places you can do this.
First, check your Start menu. Under Programs, there should be a folder named Startup. Delete any programs that you don't want to start when Windows starts.
Next, you can go to your Control Panel, select Administrative Tools, then Services. Under this console, you can choose what starts as a service when Windows starts. Find services that you do not want to start and set them to "Disable". Be cautious what you are disabling though. There are some key services that allow your PC to function. If you aren't sure, research it or leave it alone!
Next, go to the Add/Remove Programs section of the Control Panel. Uninstall anything you don't use. Often times, you will have spyware or toolbars that come bundled with other applications that will clog up your hard drive space and cause longer boot times due to starting the processes for these things.
Last, go to your Start menu, select Run, then enter msconfig and click ok. This will bring up another console. On the "Startup" tab is a list of several items that start when Windows starts. Here again, if you aren't sure what it does, research it or leave it alone!
Good luck!

Sounds like you have a bunch of software that is starting up right away. What I recommend is that you right click on each of those icons, go into the options of that software and turn off the startup features that are in there. For instance, MSN messenger has an option that will have it start up on system turn on. You can turn this off with ease. Try that and see if that helps your problem.

yes its best to do what dze above said and configure each program not to load at startup but you can also go to Start > Run > MSCONFIG startup items and uncheck them as you may have things started in the backround and not be in the system tray

Open Windows Explorer (right click START, click on Explore).
This will take you to a list of folders, and usually goes to the Start folder under your user name. Click on the + sign to the left of Programs folder that is under the Start folder. Go to the Start Up folder under the Programs folder and click on it. You will see start up short cuts there. Remove the short cuts for the programs you do not want to start up. Check other folders under Programs for similar items. When you remove them, I suggest you cut and paste these short cuts to a folder you create as you may want to return some to start up later.
Once you did the above, go (still in Windows Explorer) to Documents and Settings, All Users, Start Menu, Programs, Start Up folder (this format parallels the format under your user name) and remove short cuts there. Often programs that start up are in the all user folder so no matter which user starts things up the programs start up.
You need to reboot the pc for it to shut down the already started programs.
