My conviction is that a President is elected to lead. I believe a President should stick to his ideals and should not be swayed by popular opinion. Congress and the Senate is there to represent the people, a President is elected to be a leader and do what he believes is right.

Any thoughts?

The question was a general question and not a reference to President Bush. That said, I am a Bush supporter and one thing I like about him is, like him or not, he follows his convictions like I believe a President should.

Herb: The President is not a King if he acts like a leader should, there are 2 other branches of government.

tippingcows86: Agree, glad to hear from you.

ConcernedCitizen: see answer to Herb, and Congress approved action in Iraq. Nothing you say will make me feel bad.

Redisca: Agree. However, a President obviously has latitude in what he does and hence is capable of either tending to follow public opinion or sticking to convictions, hence my question as to what people here believe.

HOLLYWOOD54: Congress and Senate are reffered to as "representitives," the President is an "executive." There is a reason they are described in different ways. The rest of your statement is your opinion about one particular President and not really an answer, so no, you aren't making sense.

I agree with you, Presidents are elected to lead. One example would be Hilary Clinton, she voted to go to war and now says that she wants out just because thats what America wants. A president isn't a friend its a parent of America. It does whats right for the country regardless what we think is because alot of the time we don't even know all the facts.

Of course I agree with you a President should lead that is why he was elected to office.
But as for the rest of your question I do not agree with it at all and let's be clear Congress and the Senate are there to represent the people and guess what so is the President whether he travels around the country or outside of the country he is still there to represent the American People and case in point Bush, has made a fool of himself the past seven years and if you do not think so just go back and look at his interviews on any broadcast station.
Right he is suppose to be a leader but u-r- also suppose to listen to ur advisors use common sense make common sense decisions listen to the pulse of ur nation as well no one is asking u to be swayed by that pulse but u do not be a fool either and totally ignore every single one in ur cabinet, news and the nation now do u.
A president is not elected to office to put the country at risk in debt hated by the world (Is any of this making sense?) or just going off half ****** and do and decide what he feels is right and thinks he is above the law and the constitution now are they!!

I would say a bit of both in all honesty.
After all, voters (usually) choose the candidate who represents their own personal ideals and opinions the most. So while the President should be a good leader, he should also be sensitive to the thoughts and wishes of the people he represents.

Being a good leader doesn't always mean doing what "he believes is right", sometimes it means doing what's best for the people who elected him.

I know for sure it's not a job i'd want!!!

That's a common misconception about the President's role. Making unilateral decisions should not be a part of his job. That would make him a dictator. He is there to coordinate the work of the other branches of the government, but passing new legislation and deciding to go to war are the job of Congress, not the President.

Don't feel bad about not knowing that. Apparently Bush doesn't know it either.

Remember that when we talk about the president's decision, it's not only his. The president has a team of experience counselors to help him make his mind. I doubt it was only Bush's decision to go to war. And, YES, the president should be the leader and commander in chief as long he's not thinking to take over and bring communism (like Chavez is trying to do)

The President should do what he is empowered to do by the Constitution, which is mainly to carry laws into execution. The Legislative branch is there to enact laws, and the Judicial branch is there to interpret them. This is the LAW -- it is not a matter of anyone's opinion.

In a Democracy elected officials should perform the will of the people. What is lacking today is accountability. Elected officials do what special interest group pays them the most to do.

The President is elected by the people for the people. He works for us.

He is there to do what we as a whole want him to do.

If he does what he wants, he might as well be a king.

Our President Bush does not govern by polls! He does not care what the American people think. He is the BOSS, not voters.

Your opinion means NOTHING.

I also agree. President Bush has done just that. He has stayed the course and not been led astray by the media.

GO BUSH!
