I'd like a place for dancing & drinking, with maybe a private lounge area for our group.

Thanks for all the responses so far. I think Hannah's suggestions were a bit too "fancy" for what I'm looking for. Party will be 15-20 people. Something in between a "Jillians" and a "GypsyBar" maybe??

Every birthday party is unique. Do you know what you want to spend? And, how large is your group? Without knowing any specifics, here are a couple of suggestions that come to mind!
How about is a dinner/dance cruise aboard the Odyssey?

Or, how about Dick's Last Resort at Faneuil Hall?

How about having a cool evening on the cultural scene?
The Beehave at the BCA is in the former boiler room of the Cyclorama Building and looks like a cafe des artistes. They mostly have jazz musicians.

I'm not sure what you guys are into but a cool idea is the hooka bar/Moroccan restaurant in Charlestown called Tangierino. It's upscale (a bit pricey).

You can relax in the "Casbah bar" and smoke shisha (flavored tobacco) from hookas. It's very social and quite a common practice in other parts of the world. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is cool. It's a more interesting thing to do than to sit at "yet another" lounge and drink over priced drinks and shouting over the poorly mixed music...

Well, something more low key, less expensive and still really fun is the Improv Asylum over on Hanover St. (N End). It's better than a normal stand up comedy show - much more fun/funny.

There is a show at 8 and 10 pm - they change every three months. There is also a midnight show on Saturdays and it's an "improvisational drinking game." So it combines practiced skits, improv AND drinking. You can grab dinner somewhere in the North End before you go. I always have a blast when I go!! There are dinner packages available.

Groups can get a discount - check out the "Corporate & Group Events" section.

The 8 pm show is FREE on Fridays for the summer (check the site!).

The current buzz is that Eastern Standard is the best place to go with a large party. Not too fancy, but great mix of decor and menu and also a great lounge. I would highly recommend it...voted Best of Boston for large parties and is new and fresh.

Or Om in Cambridge? They have a private lounge and a dance floor: http://www.omrestaurant.com/

Perfect place! The Bell in Hand! It's right near Fanueil Hall, and they have small rooms to rent upstairs, plus it's relaxed and comfy, with good appetizers, and friendly staff. Usually downstairs has live music, so it's fun even after wards!

Lucky's Lounge is fabulous! Thursday and Friday the house band play and they are fantastic! Its a Sinatra inspired lounge and has great food and a "in the know" type of clientele that includes the Red Sox. There is not sign outside advertising the lounge so that gives it more of a exclusive feel. Check out the site... the owners also have clubs on landsdown st and Mohegan Sun.

The Medieval Manor is GREAT!!!! It's so much fun...they rag on the birthday boy or girl all night, and they give you rustic food that you don't get silverware for, and there is a show and it seems like it's never ending beer coming your way.....

Just a great time all together. With a crowd that large, you might even be able to book a prive showing.
