i hate my cousin. when my dad has to use the desktop, he always says "get off the computer" to me. so i log off. when hes done, he doesnt log off or even restart the computer. he just turns off the power. and today, i logged off his account since he didnt do it himself. then he just came and turned off the power and turned it back on. i know bad stuff wil happen since you dont turn it off properly. EVERYDAY when i start the laptop in the morning, it has a black screen with all these options and stuff like a 30 sec countdown. it even takes like ten minutes to get to the login screen. it likes like two minutes just to login to my account. how do i get him to stop? or at least tell me what other bad stuff will come of it?

no, your wrong, 7th person to answer. i CANT download anything because everytime i TRY, it says i need to password to the admin account. i dont even have simple stuff like AIM! and guess what? its MY laptop. ive been wanting it since 4th grade. now im in 7th. my mom only bought it since i got a pretty high grade for getting into hunter highschool. but i still didnt get in. and my cousin is 17 years old so he keeps bossing me around. why;s his the admin? mine was the admin when i first got it, but he hacked in since hes the one who gave me the password and made HIS the admin.

well tell him that it is HIS fault. When you shut down improperly bad things DO happen. That 30 sec count down is windows way of trying to figure out why you just unplugged it. Always turn off computers properly or it will lead to trouble and possible destruction of software/hardware.

1 - Powering-off the computer instead of turning it off damages not only the hardware (MOBO & HDD's primarily), but it can fry the software as well.
2 - The 30 second count down is Windows stating that one or more programs failed to shutdown properly, and may or may not be "damaged."
3 - At *most*, it should take no more than 2-3 minutes for the system to boot-up, and a minute or so to log into an account.
and, lastly...
4 - Since your account is not the Administration account, anything you *do* download is stored in volatile memory, and wiped when the system is powered off.
Now, is it your cousin or father frying the computer by not shutting down? If it's your cousin, why is he using your family's computer on a daily basis, let alone being the one with the admin account?
If it is your father, ask him what would happen to his car if he slammed it into reverse at highway speeds.
In any case...save-up some cash and buy your own computer, and don't let either of them use it after this one frys.

tell on your dad that your cousin will mess up the computer by not shutting down properly and downloading crap
It is very important that you shut down your system properly. Simply turning the power off with the power switch can cause serious filesystem damage. While the system is on, files are in use even if you aren't doing anything. Remember that there are many processes running in the background all the time. These processes are managing the system and keep a lot of files open. When the system's power is switched off, these files are not closed properly and may become corrupted. Depending on what files become damaged, the system might be rendered completely unusable! In any case, you'll have to go through a long filesystem check procedure on the next reboot.
and like the guy below me said you can adjust it to shutdown by just pressing the power button, right click on your desktop, properties>Screen saver tab>power button than on the new window either under the "Advanced" tab or the "power" tab there should a line that says When I press the power button... (than a drop down arrow from with options like (shut down comp, hibernate etc)

My dear friend, I understand what you feel when that happens.
Here is what you can do: go to Control Panel then to Power Options and in your upper left side you will find the option "Choose what the Power buttons Do" go in there and you may want to choose "Hibernate or Sleep"
Good Luck!
Hey don't hate your cousin, that might cause bitterness in your heart!
Princess,
Your biggest problem is not your computer, it could be you family (the young male living at your house) obviously there are invading your space and making your life miserable, you need to talk to a responsible adult that can help you get some respect from them, don't be afraid!!! just do it .
Take care.

Tell him that just force shutting down the laptop like that will eventually damage the Processor, which is not cheap to replace. You also need to ask him why he just force shuts down the computer. I would recommend suggesting to him that he go ahead and get the prices of fixing the computer now so he will know when it happens again.
