What setting does the filter need to be on when vacuuming an inground pool?

Normally, you are just bringing water and dirt up through the filter where it gets removed from the pool. This is done with the filter in the normal filtering position (unless your filter has a special function setting). After cleaning, you backwash the filter.

On my wet/dry vacuum it recommends removing the filter when sucking up water.
