"Catcher in the Rye" has been my favorite since I was a teenager. If you first read it the book sounds good but it's the message in the book that makes it make sense. Also "Eragon" and "Eldest" by Christopher Paolini are great.

James Patterson has written a series of books titled "Maximum Ride" with various subtitles. Its about a "Angel" experiment and theyre a good read even for adults.

for a girl, I'd always recommend anything by Meg Cabot. For a boy, I think old school graphic novels are awesome. YOu can also never go wrong with Harry Potter :)
