interresting fact, in the UK we've had civil unions for 2-3 years now, and this year we've had the lowest divorce rate since 1984.
so much for destroying the sanctity of marriage.

It has less to do with societal mores than you might think. The main reason most politicos are against it is monetary. If marriage between persons of the same sex were legal, the partner would be entitled to the same benefits as persons in a heterosexual relationship including health insurance, retirement benefits, social security benefits, and other rights of survivorship.
So, there you have it. Until we come to grips with the money aspect, the blame will continue to rest on the bible-thumpers.

my opinion is that it is wrong. what people do in their own home is up to them and I have no problem with that. If people want to have sex with people of the same sex and both are consenting adults then that is their choice to do so (whether i agreee or not). What i don't agre with is when they get married they will want to be able to adopt children and have access to IVF programs to have children. A child should be able to be bought up with a loving father and mother. Sure sometimes this doesn't happen (my parents are divorced) but when the child arrived in this world it was with the intention of having both parents there. I don't think a gay couple will be able to provide a correct male and female example in life. this is not to say they will not love the child though.

Whats wrong is that the idiots who are so devoted to the separation of church and state are letting their faith into the legal system aka they think same sex marriage isn't cool because its not the way God wanted it. A decidedly RELIGIOUS viewpoint used as a LEGAL excuse.

NOTHING, I am straight and I have absolutely no problem with same sex marriage, same sex couples should and have a constitutional right to marry whom ever they choose! I get soo tired of hearing the whole "The BIBLE says its wrong" Well guess what! separation of church and state!!!!!!! So It is unconstitutional to deny same sex marriage! and I dont see it being illegal much longer!

It scares people who would rather thump their bibles than think with their head.
I laugh at the "sanctity of marriage" argument, considering the state of hetero marriages in the US. I don't want to get married, I want a civil union so I'm entitled to the same benefits as hetero couples. I pay my taxes too and I'm tired of filing 'single' when I'm not, in fact, single.

What I don't understand is why would homosexual's (including myself) want to be involved in a ceremony whereas the main religion that practices it says that you are condemned to hell? It is my belief that by getting married and being homosexual you are just telling those religious bigots that they are right.
Nothing is wrong with seeking equal rights. Everything is wrong with wanting a wedding - its hypocritical.

Nothing. There are same sex couples that I know that are far more committed to one another than a lot of heterosexual couples.
I can see why it can't happen in a catholic church etc. because of church beliefs but I see no reason why the law can't legalise it.
