Depends entirely on the individual.
Im going into my final year in university and i feel its done me the world of good.
Yet i know several people who have turned into right disasters since university. Im not too sure about other universities but the one i go to a lot of the coursework given out is completely up to the person whether its done properly or if its done at all. The lecturers have an attitude of 'its up to you. if its not done i still get paid'
Yet of course theyre still there to help you if you need them. Yet some students may feel that theres nobody there to either help them or discipline them and when this happens they go off the rails a bit. Especially if they come from a strict famly and then move out to attend university they tend to go a bit mad with new found freedom.
Completely depends on the person.

College is the vehicle by which our kids can turn themselves into whatever they choose to be. You get out of it what you put into it.
