The stink may be down to the wooden frame...let's hope not.
1. Take a garbage bag, spray one pillow with Febreeze, let sit, put into garbage bag and then suck all the air out......really tests your vacuum! Do this with each pillow. Even better, remove the fabric and do with the the foam (I suspect there's a lot of stink in them. Foam can be replaced but the savings from the couch may be eaten up with new foam.
2. Spray and vacuum the rest of the couch.
3. Professional cleaning.
4. Sunlight, move the couch outside for a few hours, UV rays might help here.
5. Clean everything you can reach underneath, flip it over. Wipe down all legs, frame, etc.
Finally you can do what our parents did, cover your furniture with plastic............LOL!

UGH! Smoke fumes are the worst, aren't they. I can't handle it either. If you don't take care of it, pretty soon the whole house will adopt the smell. I'd go with the steam cleaning. Also, if any parts are removable and machine washable, go for it. Anything else you add to it (like sprays or air fresheners) will just make it smell like smoke plus the product!

I have had this problem and I think the best thing is to rent the steam cleaner for like 35$ or hire someone. When its finished and dry buy 2 boxes of baking soda or more and completely cover the sofa once youve got it covered let it sit overnight to 24 hours and vacume. Then take it outside on a good sunny day and let it sit out in the fresh air, you can also remove all covers and wash in machine and line dry with the couch. FRESH air and baking soda should work! Good Luck

I would say the best thing you can do is have it steam cleaned , this way you will have no worries . If you try and clean it your self you will end up with a bad result. If it´s not cleaned the right way you´ll end up with patches of brown on the couch, and if it´s not dried properly you might get mildew / mold.

Febreeze and try a vacuum cleaner with a hose to suck out the odors. I had dogs and we did that.
