I've always felt that the chances of getting shot would greatly increase if you own a gun or keep a gun in the home. Does anyone have any actual stats on this or know where I might be able to find them?

It's all in the aim of the person pulling the trigger. Nothing to do with if you have a gun or not.

The question is a dumb one. The question should divide those with guns in the home into two groups.

1. People like me with many years of formal training and experience with firearms whose primary concern is their safe keeping.

2. Everyone else.

The moral of the story is this. The presences of the gun is not what increases or decreases the chances of being shot. That depends on whether you are the victim of, for example, a home invasion and whether you are dumb enough to keep your guns in an unsafe way.

Those who keep guns safely and know how to use one in an extreme emergency are far less likely to be shot. But those who keep guns in a dangerous way or who are too lazy to train rigorously for a possible emergency, I would think, are more likely to be shot.

I recently heard a stat that said that 70% of murders in the US occurred in 3% of the counties of the US. AND that those counties had gun control laws. The stat was given by an author of a book on the fallacies of gun control, but I'm afraid I don't remember his name.

I think the insurance industry has those, but I don't have a link. Most gun deaths in the home are from the guns not being locked up. It's totally irresponsible not to secure your weapons.

That's sort of like the chances of being bitten because you own a dog. Actually, since your gun won't go next door and bite the neighbor, I think that is a better analogy. People keep big dogs as weapons what makes them safer than guns.

If you want to be silly more people die of obesity than gunshots so we should be banning spoons.

I think statistically people who own guns are more likely to be in situations they might be used.
Furthermore, how many guns kept in the home are ever actually used for that purpose?

I own a gun, but have never been shot. But I've been threatened twice.

In Kennesaw, Ga it is a law that EVERYONE has a gun in their home. Since they instated that law, they have had ZERO break ins.

I have had a gun in my house all my adult life, and I have never been shot.
