The Aztecs primarily used two calendars: the Xiuhpohualli (a 365 day solar calendar) and the Tonalpohualli (a 260 day religious calendar). Both these calendars repeat until the end of time.
You are actually thinking of the Mayans. There is a lot of drama and controversy over their Long Count Calendar (which the Aztecs did not use). Some people have decided that the beginning of Baktun 13, on 12-21-2012, is actually the end of the calendar, which is not true. A Baktun is about 400 years long, and with the current structure the calendar can go to 20 Baktun, but even then it doesn't end, they just add another column, called the Pictuns. Each pictun is almost 8,000 years.

I'm kind of surprised it went that far, since pure Aztecs didn't by a long shot.
They used two systems; a 260-day sacred calendar for priests to use to predict the future, and a 365-day one for the solar year and religious rites as well as agricultural duties. To the Aztecs, every 52 years thus became a "century."
There's more on it in my source, but nothing about 2012!

It's the Mayan calendar not the Aztec. They left no clue as to why the stopped it there, it may have been a religious belief or something as simple as their culture ended before they went any further.

As most we do not know the Spaniards destroyed most of the information we could have gotten. Some theorize a change, some end of the world, Others believe the most advanced civilization disappearing mysterious and suspect UFO's and they will return on 2012. I am uncertain myself. Though would admit hypothetically, if 2012 they did return it would pretty much change the world.
Still amazes me that the worlds most advanced culture disappear overnight. Then again, all anyone can do is speculate no matter how many grants you have to research it.

Maybe they just stopped and didn't get around to completing it. It could be like an ancient version of the whole Y2K thing.
