pellet or granular foods are actually better for your fish than flake as they are produced at a lower temperature and thus don't have all the vitamins cooked out of them. they generally sink though so you need to feed them slower to make sure they all get eaten.
Good alternate treats to the basic goldfish food can be tropical fish food but remember it is usually a richer diet and will fatten your goldfish ( not to mention the extra waste)
bloodworms, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp or tubifex worms can also be added to the mix (same with your tropicals)
Variety i think is the best for all fish

Goldfish can pretty much eat whatever food you have available. They really are not that particular. For our goldfish tank, sometimes as a treat we will put in an orange slice, some say this can help them with color as well. They will pick at and eat the orange pretty readily. However, remove the orange from the tank when they loose interest as it may cloud the water slightly after extended periods of time(over a day).

Blood worms Daphnia, tubflex worms are all available at the pet stores, also both tropical and goldfish love marrow fat tinned peas, take them straight from the tin and squeeze the middle out of the shell, (throw the shell away), believe it or not, goldfish also love spam, cut into tiny pieces, you can also dig up garden worms and cut them up if you can stomach doing it, it is easier if you put them in a tub in the freezer first.

All the previous answers are very good, gold fish do like all these foods. Mine especially love live brine shrimp. I do try to feed them sinking pellets more than flakes though. This is because they are so eager to feed they come up to the surface and grab the food in doing this they can also take in air which leads to swimbladder problems.Try to vary their diet as much as possible.

Out of interest, they make corn flakes out of corn, so what do they make goldfish flakes out of? ;-)) Sorry, just couldn't resist it.

In answer to your question - most fish foods are suitable but only use live foods, such as daphnia and blood worms sparingly if you only have one or two fish, those that aren't eaten will continue to live in the tank.

goldfishes(the ones which live in the natural lakes) usually eat plants. but for the ones at home u cant just give them any type of plant so give them mushed peas once a week (friday)as a treat and no food the next day (saturday) then ur fishes will thrive they'l be healthy (a clear digestive system) and happy!!!

Frozen krill are really healthy and breeders use them to bring out beautiful colors. And add some zuccini, lettuce or orange slices for their veggies. Also, peas once in a while prevent constipation (you should never see poop sticking out, that means theyre constipated). Use a good brand of pellets too, like hikari. good luck!!
