I think this was a Freudian theory..trust Freud. I personally have never met a girl who envied a man's penis. I did hear a story in nursing however about a little girl that cut off her brothers penis. The father on rushing his son to hospital nocked the little girl down. Probably an urban myth.

dear imamonkey. You may not be aware that in psychology as in medicine and science theories go in and out of fathion. Twenty five years ago I studied psychology for a year in Canda. At that time Freud's theories were still supported by many. The tide has turned. If you are doing psychology, don't be surprised if in the future you discover what you learned is no longer considerd valid.

When you are learning psychology, keep in mind that you are learning the theories of men who contributed greatly to this field through their experiments. But, you have to use your own critical thinking in determining whether a theory is plausible or applicable in the world. Think about the time period when Freud was alive and what the world was like at that time (attitudes toward women, etc).
While Freud's experiments are indeed noteworthy, remember that he suffered from chronic depression and used cocaine. Those factors may or may not have affected his theories but it's something to keep in mind when adhering to a particular individual's theories.
I personally do not believe in "penis envy" as it were, but more that back then women just wished they had the same respect and rights that men did. In today's world in the United States, that does not apply for the most part. It's not the actual penis a woman would envy, just the respect.

Alright, I'm a bloke and sorry to but in here, but just thought I'd give you a reference here to learn more about Freud, because when you start of your questions with "Psychology says" you're really only referring to the one psychologists theories, Sigmund Freud, check out the wikipedia aricle on psychosexual development, linked below

Are you kidding me? When I'm on a long road trip and there are no gas stations or rest areas around I WISH I had a penis so I can just whip it out and go on the side of the road.

No, Freud says we have penis envy, not psychology. That is a ludicrous fable.

Oh God, you again! My answer to your Oedipus question also applies here - we are not 3-5 years of age and we would not be conscious of this "penis envy" even if it did exist so we couldn't answer you.

a phallic member is in the coitus the active member... while a vagina is a passive... somehow this becomes a notion of power...
we humans want power... and guess what??
women give attention to a special part of their body that somehow resembles a phallic member in men...
You know what it is... just you haven´t noticed...
but why do you think many women nowadays have their breasts augmented?? big breasts give women power, and it´s their organ that most resembles a phallic member (please don´t argue with the clitoris, i know it is the only organ made for the sole purpose of giving pleasure to a woman, but the size of it doesn´t give the idea of power to a woman)
in conclusion... penis is for men as breasts are for women
