It could be 28 minutes from now or 280 years from now. When the superpowers square off against each other in two camps, then come back and we'll talk world war III.

Until then, just think regional conflicts, wars between rump states, proxy wars and brinksmanship. If you recall the Yom Kippur War in 1973, a coalition of Arab States (Egypt, Syria and Jordan) were soundly defeated by the Israelis. That was a worse situation than the current conflict and it didn't raise a blip on the world war radar (not that it didn't have the potential to spark a global war).

The next World War will involve a nuclear exchange, how could it not. In the first 30 minutes, nearly a billion people will have been vaporised, mostly in the US, Russia, Europe, China and Japan. Another 1.5 billion will die shortly thereafter from radiation poisoning. The northern hemisphere will be plunged into prolonged agony and barbarity.

Eventually the nuclear winter will spread to the southern hemisphere and all plant life will die. You ask when is the apacolypse, you are asking when will we commit global suicide. My answer is it won't happen soon because the larger superpowers are more rational than the rump states in the middle east.

Our biggest risk is an accidental launch of nukes by one of the nuclear powers.

Source(s):
BTW, predicting the apacolypse has been going on since Nero was throwing Christians to the lions, every turn of the Century, every end of the millenia, the 7th Day Adventists had their day in 1912, the Jim Jones cult and wacko in Waco both had their days, every passing of Haley's comet, eclipse of the sun and other end-of earth prophesies that i'm sure i missed. One thing you can be sure of, the arsenals of the US and Russia can obliterate a million Hiroshimas.....anyway, sleep tight.

Some say it has, others say it did and some say it will happen Dec 22 2012, or at least the end of the world.

that is what the Mayans, Nostradamus and many of the famed predictions made but coincedentially from different cultures around the world but they all came up with the same date and never had met or knew one another. So that is odd.

It does not say if it will be a World War or just a World Catastrophe.

So you decide. Some say we already are in it. What do you think?

I think the 3rd World War has already started. I think it begin on September 11, 2001 with the attacks on the World Trade center, etc., in New York, USA. It is just not called a World War....

I disagree with the above answer that the 4th world war will be fought with bows and arrows, or that it will be biological/nuclear in nature. Possession of these weapons is largely a deterrent. A nuclear bomb would destroy a metropolitan area - so too would the bombs the US dropped on Baghdad in 2003, if annihilation were ever the purpose.

The next world war would end when the conventional warfare has been exhausted, as nobody is willing to risk nuclear annihilation.

To answer your question though, it's obviously impossible to pinpoint the date, but I believe you can say that the periods between major conflicts are marked by valleys - a steep drop in the number of conflicts (the major nations have tired of warfare and pursue a general peace), followed by a rocking of the boat, so to speak, where some countries test the waters with skirmishes and minor wars or regional conflicts. Right now we are at little risk of a world war, though I believe the world is at the "testing the water" stage. The US has shown it will commit to armed conflict to protect itself from an unprovoked attack like 9/11. China is pursuing an aircraft carrier fleet and has within its sights greater regional leadership (some would also call it power) in Southeast and Central Asia. Putin has shown in recent years a greater emphasis to restore pride to Russia, and this includes updating the fleets and reinstating round-the-clock long-range bomber flights. Mr. Chavez is all too eager to promise money and assistance to Latin American neighbors as he builds an anti-US, anti-capitalist coalition. India continues to expand its military and its nuclear program, nearly winning a deal with the United States this last week.

Just as Italy, Japan and Germany demanded a greater role in world affairs and influence after World War I (as latecomers to the world scene, they quickly colonized Africa and China, and won little (Italy), nothing (Japan) or lost much (Germany) from Versailles, they felt belittled and marginalised). Today, China, Russia, Iran and Venezuela all are most vocal in expressing that they feel they do not command a fair share of the power-sharing agreements in place. The boat is being rocked, and other countries are willing to risk tipping it over to get a little more fish for themselves (good analogy, right?). Another world conflict is brewing.. when, and where, and who will be involved remains to be seen. Stay tuned.

If I was to be a real pedant I could say that we've already had it - but it's usually referred to as WWII.

The first World War being The Seven Years War (1756-1763) fought around the globe by all the major world powers and including some of the minor ones too.

A more important question is, where? Thinking about World War I in retrospect, J.M. Keynes thought that origins of World War I had something to do with the fact that at the time, Europe was "the densest aggregation of population in the history of the world". Today, this is no longer true. The densest aggregation of population in the history of the world is now South Asia. And both India and Pakistan now have nuclear weapons... Scared yet?
