Thank you all, I have in fact had just about all of my tests done? I am 21 weeks preg. I have just heard some women decline some tests and I just wanted to know if that was possible. (example: HIV tests, AFP, etc.)

Thank you all!

Any tests you decide to decline! This is about YOU and YOUR baby! Pregnancy is not an illness, trust your instincts.

You can decline any test you don't feel comfortable taking. Your doctor or whatever provider(I had midwives, they are more open to declining tests) you have may not like it and try to scare you into taking them. I wouldn't take their word as to why you should take the test, they basically just want that extra money. But not all tests are bad. Do the research on your own to make an informed decision on weather or not it is in the best interest for you and baby. And sometimes there is an alternative thing you can do. Like for blood glucose. Instead of drinking that nasty orange drink then going and getting your blood drawn, I just took a blood glucose testing monitor home and checked by blood sugar after every meal for a few days. Since my levels stayed within normal limits they knew I did not have gestational diabetes. I didn't want to drink that stuff because sometimes you can have bad reaction to it and I did not want to risk it. Doing it this way worked well for me. Just do your research and know your stuff and if your doctor does not respect your decions I think you should find one who does. There are doctors out there that may not like your decisions but will respect them.

I took all of the pre-natal tests, but I wish I hadn't taken the gestational diabetes one. It was not worth it and I knew I was fine. I had to fast for TWELVE HOURS which is ridiculous enough for me to go that long without food, but even worse for my baby. Unfortunately, though, when I got to the hospital lab I forgot the test order from my doctor so I had to drive home, another extra 15 minutes to put off without food, to get the stupd thing and I had to wait just to get called for the test. After I finally drank the gunk (I do not want to know what was in there, but I'm betting there was nothing real and natural in it), I had to wait at least another half an hour. I felt awful, as though I was depriving my child, which I was. Finally, it was over and I devoured the natural PB and fruit spread (on whole wheat bread with natural sweeteners), but it didn't touch my hunger, but something was going into my system at least. (I looked at the vending machine in the waiting room but saw nothing but pure junk in there. Nice. A hospital that sells junk food. Sick.) When I got home, I made a smoothie, realizing that the liquid will go into my system sooner. I think I also had a bowl of cereal just to feel full. I felt as though I did more harm than good to my baby, especially giving her that sugar soda junk and depriving her of food.

Not surprisingly, I do not have gestational diabetes. Had I been thinking, I would have shown my doctor the results of a blood sugar/diabetes test I had done a health fair prior to that. Go figure.

All tests can be denied. Some midwives don't even offer them. In the future, if I go the modern, "traditional" medicine route for my next child, I will very likely decline them, at least the diabetes one.

You can decline any test you want. That includes HIV, Hepatitis, other STDs, Genetic Screenings and so forth. I declined HIV and the genetic screening because I had just had a baby a year earlier and was HIV tested then and am married (in a monogomous relationship) so I know I didn't have it and the genetic screening because there's no point in having that done, in my opinion. I did the other STD tests just because that's part of a routine pap smear.

The biggest one I WISH I would have opted out of is the triple screen. If you ahve a good doc, he should discuss which you should or shouldn't take.
That test is not accurate at all. My doc told em this and told me it wasn't messassary to take it. I took it anyway and two weeks later he called to tell me I would have a baby with down's syndrome. I called him back later and he reminded me about the low accuracy rate and made me an appointment with a high risk doc. I went through the rest of mypregnancy always wondering, and met so mnay people who said...... "They told me I tested positive, but now my kid is 5 and he is fine!!" Well, now my baby is 8 months and she's perfectly healthy.
Any other tests, like the diabetes one, you would really want to take, because there bis things for your doc to do to counteract that if the test comes up positive.

I don't think so. I wouldn't want to decline any tests anyway. All the tests they do are to make sure you and the baby are okay. So yes it sucks having to have all those blood tests but really they are for yours and your babys well being. Believe me I hate needles too but after three kids one thing I've noticed is you get used to it. Just remember not to look and it's over in a flash.

you can decline any procedure that your doctor suggests to you. many women will decline invasive tests like amneocentesis because of the risk it poses. and many times the results aren't even acurate which is aggravating in itself. i have worked with and known quite a few women who have had false positive down syndrome tests and it just really stresses out the family for no reason.

You can decline all of them but I don't see why you would. Not only are you testing for the health of your child, it's tests for YOUR health that you should know about. Besides, insurance companies don't want to pay for ANYTHING these days, why not make them pay for these tests??

You have the option of taking a test that tests for Down's Syndrome. The test isn't 100% accurate. I did not take it.

You dont need to take any tests. I didnt take the blood syrum test, that tests for downs syndrome.

I do think taking the diabetes test is good though, if you do have it, they will help you keep you and the baby safe.
