Interesting question.
I believe it is compassionate to vote for people who will use the public fund to help the community, rich and poor - in meeting their different needs. The rich get tax write-offs, the poor get food assistance. Each is assisted by the government, hence, by you the compassionate voters.

l3ubbathedog -

So, by your reasoning, I suppose if a thief breaks into your house and steals your television it is then the thiefs television, right?

WRONG... just because the thief now posesses your television it still belongs to you...

Same principal applies to taxation! It is still your money when the government takes it out of you paycheck... Don't make the assumption that just because it is the government taking the money it is not theft... because it is. All taxation is theft...

I'm sure your not going to agree with my assessment, but think about it... here is the definition of stealing from dictionary.com

steal

1. to take (the property of another or others) without permission or right, esp. secretly or by force: A pickpocket stole his watch.
2. to appropriate (ideas, credit, words, etc.) without right or acknowledgment.
3. to take, get, or win insidiously, surreptitiously, subtly, or by chance: He stole my girlfriend.
4. to move, bring, convey, or put secretly or quietly; smuggle (usually fol. by away, from, in, into, etc.): They stole the bicycle into the bedroom to surprise the child.
5. Baseball. (of a base runner) to gain (a base) without the help of a walk or batted ball, as by running to it during the delivery of a pitch.
6. Games. to gain (a point, advantage, etc.) by strategy, chance, or luck.
7. to gain or seize more than one's share of attention in, as by giving a superior performance: The comedian stole the show.

LOOK AT THE DEFINITION: "to take (the property of another or others) without permission"... when was the last time you gave permission to the IRS to take 1/3 (or often more) of what you make? Furthermore, when was the last time they asked for your permission to take it from you... and then the definition goes on "...secretly or by force"... this is a perfect way to discribe what the government does when they take taxes... they secretely take it out of your paycheck and if you somehow do not pay them what they say you owe them you'll be FORCED to go to jail! There is no other way to think about it... taxes are theft!

I understand that it is necessary theft, but it is theft nonetheless... the goal then should be to limit the theft of our money to the absolute minimum needed to protect our rights...

Once it is paid into the tax system, it becomes OUR money, as in all of ours. We have just as much right to demand what it is spent on as you do.

By the way, I don't agree with my taxes being wasted on the Iraq war, I would rather see that money helping Americans.

It's not very compassionate to the people who's money is being forcibly taken.

99 uncompassionate acts (stealing money) to pay for 1 compassionate act (giving to the needy). It just doesn't add up.

Maybe, in a Robin Hood-esque sort of way. Personally I wouldn't call them compassionate, I'd call them a criminal.

I work hard for my money. No one is giving me any money. So why should I give one cent of mine away, unless I can make a return on it?

I call them overreaching, it is easy to say we should help (fill in the blank) when you are using someone elses money.
