with a partial tear, you would be able to lift, although with pain. A tear requires surgical intervention, it just wont heal otherwise.

Think about it. When major league pitchers tear their rotator cuff, it isn't torn completely in two, just has a tear in it, they have a surgery to correct it because it wont heal on its own.

The word you'll keep hearing here is 'depends'.

Will it heal without surgery? Depends. Depends on the extent of the tear, and the location of the tear.

If it was torn, could you lift stuff? Depends. Depends on your pain tolerance, location of the tear, etc.

If you are not able to afford the medical care you need, you might want to look in the phone book under social services to see if there are agencies in your area that can assist you in getting treatment. There's no need to be hurt and in pain just because you can't afford medical care.

If it's torn surgery is the answer, and my sister just had it. She could still lift even with the tear, but it kept getting worse and worse over time, it was so bad when they got in there, they could barley repair it and told her if it tears again, there will be nothing they can do for her. Don't let it get to bad!

I partially tore my rotator cuff last year, and I got a lot of shots (cortizone type) of steroids to help it heal, and the PT 3 times a week..but surgery was anoter option that i chose not to go for. if its 100% torn, surgery is the answer-if not, try to strengthen it on your own if you can't afford PT. if it was torn, you could lift weigt but you would fel lots of pressre in your shoulder, like dislocation.
