sorry about lack of detail. i have an ati radeon x1300 (pci-e) and i bought a new power supply(600W) so power isnt a problem! i was going to buy the ATI Radeon HD2900XT but would the GEFORCE 8800GTS 640MB work?

If you ask... will an nvidia card work if you have a ati what?

Yeah, the GeForce 8800 GTS would work, but I think the radeon HD 2900 XT is a much better choice.

However, if you want to use 2 graphics cards/ you need a crossifre or Sli motherboard to get the most out of them/plus the graphical processors need to be matched

With the newest ATI Catalyst driver, the Radeon HD 2900 XT offers much better performance than the GeForce 8800 GTS/ on stock settings sometimes even better than the GeForce 8800 GTX!

They are just different brands of graphics cards. You should be able to use either brand in your computer.

What you need to consider is the type of connector that the graphic card has. The most common are PCI, AGP and PCI-e. The ATI card will have to have the same connector that the current nVidia card has. Otherwise it will not fit in the slot inside your computer where it belongs.
